Innovating for a Zero-Carbon Future

More recently, Hyper Tech has been dedicated to the commercialization of products that can help the planet move to a zero-carbon environment, making an impact on the reduction of global warming. We have launched the development of new high-tech products, some of which are non-superconducting, such as high power density induction motors for electrified transportation applications.

Leaders in Superconductor Technology

Hyper Tech was founded in 2001 and has since become a leading manufacturer of magnesium diboride (MgB2), and niobium-tin (Nb3Sn) superconductor wire. In the process of perfecting and optimizing these superconductors, Hyper Tech engineers have accumulated considerable experience designing and manufacturing superconducting coils and associated cryogenic systems for customers using MgB2, Nb3Sn and YBCO superconductor wires, cables and tapes. This enables us to recommend to customers the right superconductor for the desired application.

A History of Innovation

Hyper Tech began manufacturing MgB2 superconductor wire in 2002 and Nb3Sn superconductor wire in 2004. Since then, Hyper Tech has become a world leader in long length, high performance MgB2 and Nb3Sn superconductor wire. In these early years of development, contracts with the Department of Defense, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the State of Ohio assisted in propelling Hyper Tech from R&D to a superconductor manufacturer. Hyper Tech developed and patented a continuous tube forming and filling (CTFF) process for the manufacturing of a powder metallurgy-based MgB2 superconductor wire in 2002. Our technology for manufacturing MgB2 and Nb3Sn superconductor wires enable long length high performance wires desired by users. Our high in-field current densities have resulted in Hyper Tech achieving a price/performance that is enabling companies to commercialize their superconducting systems at competitive prices.

Advanced Materials Research & Development

Located in Columbus, Ohio, USA, Hyper Tech’s 41,000-square-foot facility contains the equipment necessary to manufacture MgB2 and Nb3Sn superconducting wire of varying diameters and lengths and has a capacity of over 10,000 km/year with single piece lengths ranging from 1-20 km depending on the diameter and type of superconductor. Our current R&D programs focus on improving MgB2 and Nb3Sn superconducting wire even further.

Hyper Tech has also conducted R&D for other science- and energy-based applications including the development of carbon nano-tube (CNT) wires, high purity aluminum (HPAL) wire, cable and coils, pnictide wires, Cable in Conduit Conductors (CICC) comprising of various superconductors (including NbTi), Nb SRF (superconducting radio frequency) cavities and Nb3Al conductors.
